Multi?scale biodiversity drives temporal variability in macrosystems

نویسندگان

چکیده

High temporal variability in environmental conditions, populations, and ecological communities can result species extinctions outbreaks of agricultural pests disease vectors, as well impact industries dependent on reliable provisioning ecosystem services. Yet few empirical studies have focused testing hypotheses about the drivers at large spatial scales. Using decadal datasets that span aquatic terrestrial macrosystems structural equation modeling, we show local synchrony increase for entire macrosystems. These mechanisms are influenced by heterogeneity, habitat-level diversity, scale, size regional pool. This analysis is among first to provide a quantitative argument value diversity. Moreover, our conceptual model generalizable may help guide management efforts reduce conservation or service other

Turnover diversity drives large-scale biodiversity patterns

Biogeosciences Discussions This discussion paper is/has been under review for the journal Biogeosciences (BG). Please refer to the corresponding final paper in BG if available. Abstract Understanding biodiversity patterns and how they are driven at different spatial scales is a crucial issue in ecological studies. This is particularly evident for the deep sea, the largest biome of the biosphere...

Temporal Environmental Variability Drives the Evolution of Cooperative Breeding in Birds

Many vertebrates breed in cooperative groups in which more than two members provide care for young. Studies of cooperative breeding behavior within species have long highlighted the importance of environmental factors in mediating the paradox of why some such individuals delay independent breeding to help raise the offspring of others. In contrast, studies involving comparisons among species ha...

Multiscale temporal variability and regional patterns in 555 years of conterminous U.S. streamflow

The development of paleoclimate streamflow reconstructions in the conterminous United States (CONUS) has provided water resource managers with improved insights into multi-decadal and centennial scale variability that cannot be reliably detected using shorter instrumental records. Paleoclimate streamflow reconstructions have largely focused on individual catchments limiting the ability to quant...

Evaluating Temporal Consistency in Marine Biodiversity Hotspots

With the ongoing crisis of biodiversity loss and limited resources for conservation, the concept of biodiversity hotspots has been useful in determining conservation priority areas. However, there has been limited research into how temporal variability in biodiversity may influence conservation area prioritization. To address this information gap, we present an approach to evaluate the temporal...
